Letters to Maitland Mercury
The following letter (below left) was sent to the Maitland Mercury and published on 19 October 2011. The second letter (below right) is a published rebuttal from Dr David Andrew Roberts, Senior Lecturer in Australian History at the University of New England.
As publisher of Carol Baxter's wonderful and exhaustively researched book Captain Thunderbolt and His Lady, I would like to suggest to Pat Lightfoot (letters 19 October) that personal attack is often seen as the last resort of the desperate. Ms Lightfoot has every right to argue a different historical understanding to that of Carol, but vitriol has no place in proper debate and literary criticism.
Allen & Unwin is very proud to have published each of Carol Baxter's three books of Australian history, all of which have received critical acclaim. Her integrity as an historian, the rigour of her research and the way in which she makes history come alive will ensure that Captain Thunderbolt and His Lady will be read and enjoyed as a work of historical investigation for a long time.
