Statement of Constable Alexander Walker
The following is a photocopy of Constable Walker's police report dated 29 May 1870 regarding the shooting of the bushranger (identified as Frederick Ward aka Captain Thunderbolt at the Magisterial Inquiry held at Uralla on 25 May 1870). Walker's report, along with others covering the same incident, was sent by Police Superintendent J Dowling Brown to the Inspector General of Police in Sydney on 30 May, who forwarded it to the Premier of NSW. Walker's report has fortunately survived in the Colonial Secretary's 1876 file relating to Bushranging Medals [SRNSW ref: 1/2326.2 File 76/2239 No.70/4440]. Most police reports from the time have not survived.
Copies of all located materials held by State Records of NSW relating to Thunderbolt's death are available at the State Records offices in Kingswood and Sydney, and UNE's Heritage Centre at Armidale.
