John Herbert Dewson - Marriage Certificate 1912

John Herbert Dewson was the son of James Dewson and Maria Garbutt, who was the daughter of John Garbutt and Sarah Ann Ward.

Curiously, Maria's son listed her surname as "Shepherd", which was actually the surname of her short-lived stepfather, William Shepherd. Was this an attempt to hide her Garbutt origins because her brother, John Garbutt, was an executed murderer?
