Circa 1788: Michael Ward (listed as Hanley Thompson Ward on his death certificate and as Michael Hanley Ward on his wife’s death certificate), was born in London, supposedly to Hanley Thompson Ward (no confirmation found to date)[1]
Circa 1792: Sophia Jane Elizabeth Ann [?] born Islington, London.
NB. Sophia was listed as aged 86 on her death certificate which produces an estimated birth year of 1787/88. However the informant was her son Joshua who listed his own age incorrectly and that of two of his three named siblings, so the information regarding Sophia’s age cannot be considered reliable. The 1828 Census entry for Sophia is more likely to be reliable as the information was provided by Michael and Sophia themselves; Sophia was listed as aged 36 at that time, indicating that she was born around 1791/92.
NB. Sophia’s maiden surname is uncertain as different certificates recorded different surnames. Sophia’s death certificate (1874) records her maiden surname as Frosley, the informant being a son who provided inaccurate answers to other questions so this information cannot be considered reliable. Her husband’s death certificate (1859) is heavily inked and Sophia’s maiden surname is unclear; the most likely is Crolston although it could be Crobston, Brobston, Brolston or Brobiton (the first letter definitely is not F, nor are the last letters ley). Of these possibilities, only Crolston and Brobston appear as surnames in a Google search. A poor quality photocopy of her daughter Selina’s death certificate lists Sophia’s maiden name as Brensley, which is remarkably similar to her sister Amelia’s middle name Brenchley; their sister Esther’s death certificate also lists Sophia’s surname as Brenchley. Amelia’s own death certificate (1872) lists Sophia’s maiden surname as Peisley (which could perhaps be a misreading of Frosley), while her brother Joshua’s death certificate (1879) lists it as Transley. There are distinct similarities between all of these surnames so one is likely to be accurate. Michael Ward’s death certificate indicates that he and Sophia were married around 1813, however Sophia had a daughter Sophia born around 1808, raising the possibility of an earlier relationship, which may account for the surname differences. Sophia’s death certificate also suggests that she had twelve children however references have been found to only eleven. Perhaps the death certificate reference is incorrect; perhaps an additional daughter was born in England between 1810 and 1814 and died in infancy.[2]

12 Jul 1828: Permission refused re Ward’s application to transfer his Ticket-of-Leave from his residence at Windsor to Sydney[18]

1833-1837: Post office directories list Michael Ward as a resident of Wilberforce[22]
Circa Apr 1833: Harriot Ward born to Michael and Sophia; buried 26 Feb 1835 Wilberforce[23]
NB. While Harriot Ward was not listed as a member of the Ward family in any primary-source reference, Michael and Sophia were the only Ward family living in Wilberforce at that time so, on those grounds alone, she was almost certainly their child. Additionally, she was unbaptised, which was normal for the Ward children, and her birth fits neatly between those for William (c1830) and Frederick (1835); also Michael and Sophia’s daughters Sarah and Amelia named their own daughters Harriet which is all strong circumstantial evidence linking her with the Ward family.
NB. Harriot’s connection with the Ward family is discussed further in Who were Frederick Ward’s parents?
10 Jul 1834: Michael Ward granted Conditional Pardon. Application received late 1833; 13 Dec 1833: letter sent from Colonial Secretary’s Office to Principal Supt of Convicts asking him to report; 8 May 1834: approval for CP granted; 29 Apr 1837: certified copies of CP transmitted to Principal Supt of Convicts for delivery[24]

1835: Frederick Ward born at Windsor according to information he provided to the Maitland Gaol authorities in 1856[26] (For further information and source references, see When was Frederick Ward born? and Where was Frederick Ward born?)
16 Oct 1836: Michael Ward listed as farmer at Windsor when daughter Esther baptised at Wilberforce[27]
1841 Census: Ward family resided in brick or stone house in Macquarie Street, Windsor; 6 residents on day of census, all of the Church of England, comprising Ward, his wife & four young males, the latter as follows: one aged 2-<7 – presumably Frederick; one aged 7-<14 – presumably William; two aged 14-<21: presumably Joshua and George
NB. Daughters Esther and Selina (aged 14 and 12 at the time of the census) were evidently not at the family’s residence on the night of the census, perhaps being ‘in service’ at that time[28]
Circa 1846: Ward family moved to Maitland where Michael Ward was reportedly employed by Mr Gorrick of Maitland[29]
NB. This secondary-source information has proved possible to substantiate to date, however other sources indicate that the Wards were living in Maitland by early 1847 so it seems reasonable, particularly as he was listed as a ‘dealer’ on his death certificate.
Sep 1847: Fred’s brother Edward Ward was residing in Singleton and advertising the services of his entire (stud) horse ‘Young Bassano’; Jan/Feb 1848: Edward was apparently residing in Maitland when the groom looking after his stud horse attempted to embezzle money from him[30]
Nov 1847: Ward family lived at Stapylton’s Cottages, Stapylton Place, West Maitland, when an advertisement announced that a reward was available if information was delivered to Mr Ward there or to Mr John Crowder at Lochinvar (employer/‘foster parent’ of Michael Ward’s grandson John Garbutt – see Sarah Ann Ward and her family) regarding a horse stolen from Cobcroft’s farm at Cockfighter’s Creek[31]
Aug 1848: Joshua Ward (then unmarried) listed the same Stapylton Place address when advertising the services of ‘Honest Tom’ and ‘Young Bassano’[32]
Sep 1849: George Ward (then unmarried) listed the same Stapylton Place address when advertising the services of ‘Honest Tom’[33]
Mid-1849: a William Ward hired by Patrick Frederick Campbell as a groom to look after a stud horse (probably Baronet) for an entire season, remaining with him until Jan 1850; this William Ward later brought charges against Campbell for not fully paying him; Mar 1851: a William Ward was a stockkeeper for Mr Mitchell of Melville (some 6 miles north-west of Maitland); Dec 1852 - Nov 1854: a William Ward worked at Tareela station (NB. latter reference is probably to a different man)[34]
1850s: Tocal connection: Fred worked for Charles Reynolds at Tocal for a year as a stockman and horsebreaker, while his brother William Ward was later employed there for 8 or 9 months according to Reynold’s own statement; their brother George Ward accepted employment at Tocal at some stage between Aug 1852 and Aug 1853 remaining there until Jun 1854 when he drowned while driving Reynolds’ cattle across the Hunter River at West Maitland[35]
1856: William Ward in partnership with Michael Blake at Lambs Valley where stolen horses were hidden (see Timeline: Frederick Ward 1835-1863)
4 Apr 1859: Michael Ward (listed as Hanley Thompson Ward), a dealer, died at West Maitland; 6 Apr 1859: buried at Church of England burial ground, West Maitland; funeral notice listed name as Audley Thompson Ward (probably an error for Andley Thompson Ward)[36]
